A woman who drunkenly urinated on a war memorial — twice — was arrested and put in jail for seven months.
Kelly Martin reportedly desecrated a monument in Grays, Essex, England — first in April when there were Remembrance wreaths on it, and then a second time while out on bail in June.
“Each of these [offenses] is so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate. The two cases of outraging public decency involve urinating on a war memorial,” Judge John Lodge said in court, Daily Mail reported.
Inevitably war memorials were constructed at the [center] of towns and villages so on a daily basis people could be reminded of the sacrifices made by people who died. People use them as a place around which they congregate and that’s not wrong, but when people take that step further and abuse them by urinating on them that’s a matter the court needs to take very seriously indeed.
While being led into the courtroom, Martin could be heard shouting, “F**k this.”
“What makes your case particularly bad is having been caught doing it one time, when the nation was commemorating the worst battle of the First World War you were caught doing it again in the middle of the day,” Lodge told Martin during her hearing.
“On April 13 she was seen by PC James Shelton urinating on the war memorial, she was seen urinating on the epitaph with a number of people present, including mothers and their children,” prosecutor Juliet Donovan said.
“The officer described her has having a beer in her hand and struggling to pull her trousers up.”
Martin was charged with two counts of outraging public decency, assaulting a paramedic at the scene, and using abusive language toward a paramedic. She was sentenced to one month in prison for the first charge, three months for the second, and another three for both the assault and abusive language charges.
The story quickly went viral, with many shaming Martin for her actions.
“She should have been made to clean the Memorial on her hands and knees using a toothbrush as part of her sentence! Take away her welfare benefits and any government freebies!” one reader commented on Mad World News’ Facebook page.
